Shine Bright Be Fearless is an organization that holds so much meaning to me. Seeing it grow over the past eight years has been incredible. Each recipient is incredible, worthy and inspirational and seeing the awe on their faces during award ceremonies, shopping days and wellness days is moving. The meaning behind shine bright to let those be seen who are often overlooked it what I see as one of the core values of shine bright and my favorite parts about this charity.

Being part of Shine Bright Be Fearless is an incredibly fulfilling role, and I’m so happy to be involved in an organization that connects and celebrates inspiring young women. Currently, I’m responsible for planning and organizing our Wellness Day, an event we hosted for the first time last year. What I especially loved about this experience was the opportunity to connect with all the recipients and create a day that allowed everyone to socialize, have fun, and practice helpful wellness strategies!

I love being a part of Shine Bright Be Fearless because it allows me to connect with amazing young women who are being recognized for not only their achievements but their character and how they treat those around them. I cannot express the gratitude and joy I feel getting to award these girls who make such a big impact in their community simply by being the special person they are. It has been such a rewarding experience to be a part of Shine Bright and I am so happy to contribute to this organization’s mission as the Fundraising Coordinator and being hands on garnering supports that are integral to the continuation and reach of the organization’s benefits.

I’m excited to give back by helping support girls who may need encouragement as they approach their senior years. The value in a program like Shine Bright Be Fearless is that it gives young women a safe place to build each other up and to recognize that our voices and actions matter. It builds confidence and reminds us that we all have something amazing to offer. I think SBBF does so much for Edmonton because it inspires young women to believe in themselves and then share that confidence with others. Our Story
The Shine Bright Be Fearless Awards were founded in 2018 by an idea at a kitchen table. Jill, our founder, was going through the transition from Grade 9 to 10 herself, uncertain about the change in schools, friends and routine. Although cliché, the conversation went to what she could get to help with her confidence on that first day.
She saw a gap for young women, the untalked about transition from Junior High to High school. It is terrifying, can make you feel out of place and lost in your own body. She wanted to help young women who often go unnoticed see their incredible side, the resilience they have shown and commitment to school. To reward them with a shopping spree to get an item or two so that they knew how their hard work was valued their difficult, yet incredible dedication to school was noticed. To go into high school with that knowledge as so many of the recipients are shocked by how amazing others see them as.
In 2018, three awards were coordinated by a very small group. Following year one, word spread, and the potential of the award was clear. The committee grew, as did the number of recipients!
As a youth women-led committee, Shine Bright Be Fearless, focuses on the outside so that recipients can focus on the inside. Throughout the nine years this award has been active, it has grown to become a registered charity through the YWCA and holds fundraisers, ceremonies, a wellness day and most importantly, a shopping day with sponsors.
Shine Bright Be Fearless continues to honour young women who exhibit resilience, optimism and dedication to their studies when faced with adversity. Over the past 8 years, Shine Bright Be Fearless has given out over 200 awards to students in the Edmonton Catholic School District and Edmonton Public School District.
